Do I have to pay anything for my netbook? No. This first rollout of netbooks is fully funded by the school and Commonwealth government. Future funding cannot be guaranteed. For this first rollout you will receive: -24/7 use of the netbook - free internet access at school (download limits apply) - a suite of software installed - a three year warranty on the device and a one year warranty on the battery - replacement program for accidental breakage (an excess fee applies) - access to technical support by the school's IT support staff |
Who owns the netbook? The netbook is owned by the school and you are "borrowing" it for own and work use. After 3 years (the duration of the warranty) ownership will transfer to you.Under our software licencing agreement, all software will be removed and the open source Linux operating system and Open Office will be installed for your use. If you leave within the 3 year period, the netbook is returned to the school for redeployment. |
What if my netbook is stolen or damaged? The school will replace netbooks that have been accidentally damaged or stolen. For stolen netbooks, a police report must be filed. In either case a $200 replacement fee applies to be paid by the issued user. We do ask that students take all reasonable measures to ensure the security of the netbook when away from school i.e. don't leave it on the front seat of the car. Parents should also check their own Home Contents insurance as school owned and borrowed netbooks may be covered under your insurance. If you are able to claim on home insurance then the $200 replacement fee does not apply. |
Who will be responsible for arranging warranty work? The school's NHC (Netbook Helpdesk Centre) will be in charge of all warranty claims. You will be supplied with a replacement 'loaner' netbook while yours in under repair. |
How will the netbook be labelled/identified? The serial number of the device will be recorded against your name. Also a dymo type label will be attached to the underside of the netbook with your name. |
Can I personalise my netbook ? i.e stickers No - the only permitted personalisation allowed will be in terms of desktop background images and screensavers (appropriate, of course). As a general guide, the netbook needs to be able to be returned in as original condition as possible. Definitely NO ENGRAVING. |
Can I use my netbook for personal use? Yes. Your netbook should be a constant companion and the more you use it, the more you will get used to it. However, keep in mind that it is to be mainly used for schoolwork and research. Any other use should not detract or interfere with the working of the device for this main purpose. |
What software comes with the netbook? Can I load other software? The netbook comes with Windows 7 Premium operating system, Microsoft Office 2010 and McAfee virus protection. Teachers may also request you to download and install certain programs they use for their course. You may also wish to install printer and/or scanner drivers for your home printer. Any other software installed should be for educational purposes only and you must have the appropriate licence for any software. File sharing programs (e.g BitTorrent) are strictly prohibited as are multi player games and games not of any educational value. |
When will I receive my netbook? We are hopeful of distributing notebooks to Years 10 and 11 by the beginning of term2, 2011. Year 9 will receive their notebooks at the beginning of term 4, 2011. |
Who do I see if my netbook has a software problem? i.e. becomes corrupted Your NHC at your school. IT support staff will not spend extra time trying to troubleshoot the problem. They will simply reimage the device and bring it back to its original condition. This means all data saved on the netbook hard drive will be lost (see next question) and any extra software you installed will need to be reinstalled by you when the netbook is returned to you |
Will the netbook run a specified virus protection application ? Yes it will come preinstalled with McAfee virus protection program. This will automatically update itself each time you connect to the school network. There should be no need for you to run a scan as this program works in the background and constantly monitors your computer. You are not allowed to uninstall this program in favour of another virus protection program of your choice. |
Am I required to backup my data saved on the netbook? Yes this should become standard practice. Your data files only may be backed up on the school network. Alternatively or in conjunction with this you may prefer to use a portable hard drive kept at home. |
Will I use my netbook every lesson? Will it replace my exercise book? Not necessarily. The netbook is a learning tool just as a textbook may be considered a learning tool. Teachers have been incorporating IT into their teaching programs and as this progresses so will the use of netbooks in more and more lessons. You will still need to use an exercise book. Written notes and summaries as well as essays and written working out are still an integral part learning. |
What are the netbook specifications? For this first rollout the notebook is the HP Probook 5320m. Screen: 13.1" Anti-Glare (1366 x 768). CPU: Intel Core i3-370M Processor 2.40 GHz. RAM: 2048 Mb. Hard Drive: 250 Gb SATA. Video: Intel HD Graphics. Camera: 2 megapixel integrated. Network: WLAN 802.11 b/g/n - LAN 10/100/1000Mbps. Case: 13.1" Hardcover Sleeve |
Why aren't Years 7 and 8 getting netbooks? The government's Digital Education Revolution funding is for Years 9 - 12 only. Any laptop program initiated before this would have to be fully funded by the school and parents. This would mean a substantial increase in school fees or perhaps the introduction of a 'netbook' fee. Ongoing discussions continue on this issue and any decisions made will involve parents, teachers and the wider parish community. |
How often do I need to charge my netbook? The nebook can operate for 5 - 6 hours constant use on a single charge. This can be extended by using the device set to the correct power save options. It will be your responsibilty to charge the device overnight in preparation for use the next day. This means there will be no need to carry your charger with you at school. It is important to run down the battery completely (for at least the first few charges) to maximize the duration and life of the battery. Running the battery down almost completely before charging will ensure maximum battery life. Otherwise you may be up for the cost of a new battery within the 3 year term. |
Why aren't Year 12 getting netbooks? It is inevitable that some group just misses out when introducing new initiatives. To counter this Year 12 will have priority access to school owned computers in classrooms and will be allowed to bring in their own laptop if they wish. They will not have access to the school network (from their own laptops) but will have access to the school's internet. Students who do bring in their own laptop will need to register them with the NHC. The school cannot take any responsibility for loss or damage to non school computers. |
